Spread the love

Ella combines the breathtaking mountains covered in rainforest, the expansive tea plantations, and the magnificent waterfalls of Sri Lanka. Travelers may anticipate spending their days in the lushest landscapes, taking in the views from hilltop homes, and exploring challenging hiking paths in one of the world’s leading producers of tea. Even the journey to Ella by the iconic blue train through bamboo trees and tropical mist is one of life’s most unforgettable events. With the help of our thorough travel guide, enjoy all the top best things to do in Ella, Sri Lanka.

1. Start by climbing Little Adam’s Peak.

Despite being smaller than its larger sister Adam’s Peak, Little Adam’s Peak is just as spectacular. Three lush peaks that form the breathtaking ridge rise majestically over the valley below. Trek across breathtaking scenery, going through nearby towns, tea plantations, and vast grass fields. Being to the summit is an experience unlike any other; you get to take in the breathtaking, spectacular views.

The distance between Ella Town and the base of the mountain is around 45 minutes on foot. It takes around 15 minutes to go from the bottom to the top.

2. Journey Along the Rails of the Nine Arch Bridge

Ella’s Nine Arch Bridge is famed across the world for its beauty. The magnificent bridge is 25 meters high and 91 meters long! You’ll find it tucked up in the deep green hills among low-lying clouds just outside Ella Town and on the same path as Little Adam’s Peak.

Before reaching the location, stroll through the magnificent bamboo forest, enjoying the stone arches and waving to those passing by on the vintage blue train. This is one of the nicest destinations in Sri Lanka to visit!

3. Visit Lipton’s Seat

Lipton’s Seat in Haputale is an ideal morning or afternoon excursion from Ella. Take the train to Haputale and then a tuk-tuk to the breathtaking overlook above the Lipton tea estate. This is where Thomas Lipton (a well-known tea grower) would sit to enjoy his lovely tea fields. It’s also where he sowed the first seeds of Sri Lanka’s most important export. When you gaze down on the endless green tea fields, with tidy rows of plants and smiling, hard-working people collecting leaves, it’s simple to see why he picked this location.

4. Explore Diyaluma Falls, 2nd Highest Waterfall in Sri Lanka

Diyaluma Falls is a must-see in Ella and the second tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It’s the ideal time to be out in nature and enjoy the climb to the top of the waterfall.

Enjoy the thundering strength of the water crashing upon the rocks from the foot. You’ll feel on top of the world at the summit when you explore the three natural infinity pools that reach out onto the cliff edge. Swimming in these waters and seeing down the 220 meters below is an unforgettable experience.

5. Go on safari in Yala or Udawalawe National Park

Ella is the ideal destination to spend a significant amount of time in Sri Lanka. The main drawback is that there are no elephants or leopards in Ella. You must leave Ella and go on a safari to observe these creatures!

There are several trips that depart from Ella and travel to Udawalawe or Yala National Parks. In all honesty, I liked Udawalawe National Park, although Yala has a better possibility of seeing leopards, whilst Udawalawe is more focused on elephants.

Whatever you do, you must go on a safari in Sri Lanka during your vacation!
